Dataset Details

Construction projects and any change of land use or occupancy on private property will require a building permit. It is important that the project complies with the Vancouver Building By-law to meet life safety, livability, accessibility, and sustainability requirements. A building permit is the tool we use to achieve these requirements.

Generally, a permit is required to begin construction, such as: Any new construction (new buildings and/or renovations to existing buildings that create a new area); Changing the land use of an existing commercial space; Adding a secondary suite to an existing housel Renovation projects that include moving interior walls and/or existing plumbing, electrical, or gas lines; Structural repairs; Drywall repairs to fire separations in multi-unit residential buildings; Building or altering a garage, shed, or deck; Renovating or tenant improvements for a new or existing commercial space.

This dataset includes information of all building permits issued by the City of Vancouver, starting in 2017. The data is based on permit issuance date and does not show current status of a permit or changes after a permit is originally issued.

The City of Vancouver share with everyone its open and accessible datasets while adhering to rights of privacy, and publish datasets allowing everyone to develop digital applications that may improve government transparency and public participation, enhance access to City services, and ultimately strengthen democracy and contribute to a more liveable city.
